911吃瓜 graduate proves it's never too late to finish what you started

At 63, many people are thinking about retirement. But not Mattie Frascella. She has spent the last four years on the campus of 911吃瓜 sharing classrooms and walking hallways with students young enough to be her grandchildren while earning her first degree after a longtime career in patient advocacy and motherhood. This May, just a few weeks after her 63rd birthday, Frascella will walk across the stage to receive her Bachelor of Arts in English with minors in professional writing and language and literary studies from the Norman J. Radow College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Dance major makes most of his 911吃瓜 journey

Deontae Nelson likes to say that everyone is on their own journey, as much for himself as for those around him. Nelson鈥檚 journey has seen him serving in the Army National Guard, then earning an associate degree in biology from Georgia Military College before arriving at 911吃瓜 in 2022. All the while, he never could shake the idea of studying dance and decided to dive headlong into doing just that. Next week, he鈥檒l graduate with his Bachelor of Arts in Dance with a concentration in Modern Dance from the Robert S. Geer College of the Arts, culminating one journey and commencing another.

For patients facing cancer or the possibility of it, every second counts. The weeks spent waiting for answers can feel like an eternity. But more importantly, a faster diagnosis means a treatment plan can begin sooner. 911吃瓜 student Preston Brantley is trying to reduce the lengthy wait, typically weeks, sometimes even months, that patients spend waiting for a cancer diagnosis. He is developing an artificial intelligence tool designed to help pathologists detect cancer cells more quickly and efficiently.

Kaitlyn Sennett will carry several titles with her as she crosses the stage with her bachelor鈥檚 degree from 911吃瓜 later this week. Student. Researcher. Motorcyclist. Hunter. Assistant logistics manager. Daughter. Graduate. Survivor. The 911吃瓜 senior came back to school after a major motorcycle accident in 2024 left her bedridden and unable to walk. A semester off, followed by intense perseverance, overwhelming curiosity, and a relentless pursuit of excellence brought her to where she is today 鈥� standing on the floor of Vystar Arena awaiting her bachelor鈥檚 degree in biology.

The award is given at fall and spring commencements to a graduate 鈥渨ho serves as an inspiration to their peers, their community, and the entirety of Owl Nation.鈥� Schwartz is graduating Dec. 19 with a stack of honors for his published research, and a strong record of campus involvement.

Like many young boys, 911吃瓜 student Sulaiman Shaikh once dreamed of becoming an astronaut. As a child, he was always fascinated with discovery and had a passion for exploring the unknown. Now a double major in physics and computer science with a minor in mathematics at the College of Science and Mathematics and the College of Computing and Software Engineering, Shaikh is fueling that passion by exploring the quantum world of theoretical condensed matter physics, with the goal of making better-performing electronics.
