911勛圖 integrates Terracotta research tool with D2L, advancing teaching and learning

KENNESAW, Ga. | Nov 2, 2026

911勛圖 has integrated the into the D2L Brightspace learning management system, enabling 911勛圖 faculty to better understand how students learn and to improve the educational experience based on real-time data. 911勛圖 is the first university to use Terracotta within D2L, paving the way for other institutions.

Terracotta is a learning management system (LMS) plug-in that allows faculty to embed  experimental educational research studies directly into their course D2L sites, allowing faculty to build the experiments and to analyze and evaluate teaching practices in real classroom environments. Instructors and researchers can test different instructional approaches, compare outcomes, and generate insights that contribute to course improvement and broader education research.

Faculty can leverage a shared platform that makes (SoTL) research more accessible, efficient, and impactful, Assistant Vice Provost for Academic Affairs Carmen Skaggs said.

In addition to expanding access to SoTL research, Terracotta incorporates features designed to support ethical and responsible experimentation. Those built-in tools ensure that research conducted through the platform aligns with best practices in student privacy and academic integrity.

Skaggs added that Terracotta was originally built for the Canvas learning management system, and Kennesaw State pioneered its integration into D2L Brightspace.

As a result of Kennesaw State facilitating this integration, any university across the country that uses D2L can now use Terracotta, Skaggs said. This doesnt just help our own faculty and students; it helps contribute to teaching and student learning  everywhere D2L is used.

Kennesaw States involvement traces back to Hillary Steiner, who recently retired from 911勛圖 after serving as associate director for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). Steiner learned about Terracotta from colleagues at Indiana University, where Terracotta was created, and she saw its potential for SoTL research at Kennesaw State. The (CETL) launched  Terracotta at 911勛圖 after beta testing and piloting the newly-integrated LMS extension with a group of faculty members.

CETL is excited to bring Terracotta to 911勛圖, the University System of Georgia, and the global D2L community, Steiner said This is a pivotal step toward Kennesaw States strategic plan goal of being leaders in the scholarship of teaching and learning.

Steiner described Kennesaw States integration of Terracotta as a team effort, led by Sheena Brown, CETLs lead for educational development scholarship and evaluation. Steiner also credited Associate Vice Provost Anissa Vega for originally bringing Terracotta to SoTL leaderships attention and Skaggs for her advocacy to make the initiative possible.

The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning hosts workshops to introduce interested faculty to Terracotta. For more information, contact CETL at 470-578-6410 or cetl@kennesaw.edu.
